What are dental implants?

Implant treatment restores a missing tooth with an artificial root placed in the bone tissue. Once it has integrated, a crown or another prosthetic restoration is fixed on the implant.

The method can replace one, several or all missing teeth. The treatment plan is made after an examination and computed tomography.

When implantation may be considered

An oral surgeon assesses indications and contraindications, taking general health and bone volume into account.

  • a single missing tooth;
  • several gaps in the dental arch;
  • complete absence of teeth;
  • when preparing adjacent teeth for a bridge is not possible or not desired;
  • unsatisfactory retention of a removable denture.

Main treatment protocols

Classic and immediate implantation are used, as well as full-arch restoration with All-on-4 or All-on-6 protocols. A particular option is selected only after diagnostics.

  • Classic implantation

    The implant is placed during a separate surgical stage; prosthetic treatment is carried out after integration.

  • Immediate placement

    In selected cases, an implant can be placed immediately after tooth extraction.

  • Full-arch restoration

    Several implants support a prosthesis in cases of complete tooth loss.

  • Implant-supported prosthetics

    After implant integration, a crown or denture is made and fitted with occlusion control.

How implant treatment proceeds

Treatment includes a consultation and CT scan, digital planning, surgical placement, a period of osseointegration and the prosthetic stage. When bone volume is insufficient, separate preparation may be needed.

  • Diagnostics

    Examination, CT scan and planning of the future prosthetic restoration.

  • Placement

    The surgical stage under local anaesthesia.

  • Integration

    Monitoring healing and implant integration.

  • Crown

    Fabrication and fixation of the permanent restoration.

Clinical stages of implant treatment

Two published clinical cases are presented in their original sequence, from diagnostics and the surgical stage to the final restoration.

In this case, the aim was to restore chewing and aesthetic function for a patient who had lost all teeth.

    The aesthetic implant-treatment result was achieved with prefabricated plastic teeth and a plastic base.

Clinical case 2

Single-stage dental implantation in Minsk. Before-and-after photographs of the restorative procedure

In this case, a patient from Russia who was on a business trip in Belarus sustained a fracture of the root of the upper left central incisor after an impact.

The aim was to restore the original appearance of the front teeth.

It was decided to place an implant in a single stage without raising a flap and to fix a provisional abutment.

Prosthetic treatment was then completed after the gum and bone tissues had healed.

  1. Stage 1

    Damage to the upper left central incisor

    The patient requires prosthetic treatment in the area of the front teeth.

  2. Stage 2

    Root fracture of the upper left central incisor

    Removal of the remaining root and immediate implant placement are required.

Implant or bridge?

Implant treatment does not require preparation of adjacent teeth, but includes a surgical stage and an integration period. A bridge may be appropriate if supporting teeth already require crowns. The choice is based on the condition of the supports, bone, bite and general health.

Frequently asked questions

Is implant placement painful?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. Swelling and soreness may occur after treatment and are managed according to the dentist’s recommendations.

How long does implant treatment take?

The duration depends on the protocol, bone condition and any preparation that is needed. Complete treatment normally includes surgical and prosthetic stages.

Can an implant be placed immediately after extraction?

Sometimes, if tissue condition and primary stability allow it. The decision is made after diagnostics.

What are All-on-4 and All-on-6?

They are options for restoring a complete dental arch with a prosthesis supported by four or six implants.

How should implants be cared for?

Daily hygiene, appropriate cleaning aids for the restoration and regular professional check-ups are needed.
